We left Budapest this morning at 7.30 am. It was minus 7 degrees as we hit the road. The first couple of hours saw dense fog and freezing temperatures. We arrived in Venice at 3pm and parked our car in a long-term car park. We then caught a ferry to the wharf near our apartment in Dorsoduro where our greeter met us. She walked us through the maze of Venice to our apartment and showed us around. We hid our excitement until she had left. Our apartment is surrounded on two sides by canals and has its own private courtyard opening onto the water. We quickly showered before getting properly lost trying to find Saint Mark’s Basilica. We ended up back near our apartment and bought fantastic veal from the local butcher. We then found a nearby shop and bought wine and supplies to head home and cook. Dinner was taken in the kitchen overlooking the beautiful canal as the wine disappeared. We plan to head out early tomorrow to see the sights before finding somewhere good for lunch. After that, we may get lost for weeks.
