Budapest Monoliths
It is late into our final night in Budapest as we turn our thoughts to the road ahead. We have eaten a hearty dinner of pizza and red wine and walked home in sub-zero temperatures. We will leave tomorrow morning at 7am to drive the 700 ks to Venice. We could easily stay in Budapest for a while longer but the call of Italy is strong. Over the next two weeks, we will visit Venice before moving on to Rome and then Tuscany. This morning, we drove out to Memento Park to see the giant statues torn down after the fall of Communism. We walked around the monoliths in freezing temperatures before heading back into Budapest to eat at Restaurant Kádár, which has been described as, ‘one of the most famous restaurants in Budapest’. The review goes on to say, ‘Mr Kadar himself provided the best home made dishes for even the elite in the 50s-60s and the style of the place just remained as it looked like in those times’. To our surprise, Mr Kadar remains in charge and chose to serve us personally, recommending dishes he thought we would like (a photo of my whole slow-cooked goose risotto, with livers carefully detached for show, is on the blog). After that, we spent the afternoon at the Central Markets before preparing for dinner. And tomorrow we will be preparing to embrace the ‘la vita di Venezia’
