Arriving in Budapest
After a leisurely drive from Vienna, we arrived in Budapest in the early afternoon to perfect sunshine. We were met at our apartment in the Jewish Quarter by Kata. Whilst waiting out the front, we looked up at the bullet-riddled façade of our building. On entering, it was clear the travel gods were again smiling on us. A perfect two-bedroom apartment with huge French doors overlooking the bustling surrounds. Kata later told us the bullet holes were from the 1956 uprising. Prior to that, the Nazi’s turned these streets into a ghetto for Jews. A sobering start to our visit to this very beautiful city.
